Canada welcomes hundreds of thousands of international students every year. It is a well-known destination for a couple of reasons, which include a large variety of educational institutions with programs of studies ranging from English as a Second Language to PhD programs. If you would like to study in Canada, a study permit might be required.
For a program of studies that is longer than six months, a study permit will be required. In order for you to be eligible to apply for a study permit, you must first obtain a letter of acceptance from a Canadian designated learning institution [DLI].
In order to enter Canada, you will need a temporary resident visa [TRV] or an electronic travel authorization [eTA], depending on your country of citizenship [US citizens are not required a TRV or eTA to enter Canada]. The immigration documents will not be issued past the expiry date of your passport. Therefore, make sure that first you apply for, and obtain a valid passport [if necessary].
The study permit comes with conditions and remarks that might include authorization to work in Canada. However, this work authorization will have restrictions and it will only allow international students to engage in twenty hours of work per week during academic terms. If your educational institution has scheduled breaks, you might be authorized to work full-time during the scheduled breaks. If you are interested in working full-time in Canada, please visit the work section of our website to learn more about your possibilities.
Important tip: When you receive your immigration document read the content of the document carefully and verify the spelling of your name, the date of issue and the date of expiry, as well as the conditions and remarks added to your study permit.
